    Hello,

  • 21.02.13

So after a short but brilliant season of Blueberries and an even shorter one of the worldest tastiest peaches ( which we might get one last Hurrah from if we're lucky)  we move right along to the next delicious offering. Those of you with long memories will remember that at the Showgrounds markets we had the first tasting of Chinese Pears from Hi Fye Pistachios.

The clement weather of late has pushed Peter's harvest one more week and Stanbach Blueberries will be back for an encoure.  This time please buy some extra's and put them in your freezer.

This week we havea real treat ...Australian grown Capers. There are only about 6 caper growers in the whole country and most grow commercially but this week we have Russell Mitchell from Conapaira Capers with us at market. Russell is based in The NSW Riverina area and although we are a Victorian farmers market we can't find any Victorians who grow Capers, so for Russell and you we are making an exception.

    Hi

So the story this week is Tomatoes, last Week you will have seen that Jindivick Tomatoes came with there hydroponic tomatoes. Fresh a nd sweet. For me one of the most evocative tastes of summer is tomato and fresh basil (and maybe some bocconcini)

Did you hear the news ? The farmers are fighting back! From that most beleagured of farming pursuits, the Dairy industry. I was listening to ABC 774 and they were interviewing a Dairy Consultant from Warnambool ( I came to the interview late and didn't take notice of names so this is very anecdotal) who had attended a meeting of disgruntled farmers sick of being underpaid for their milk.

    Hello

Happily this week we have a few more of our regular stallholders back with us again. Pure Pies are back from the land of the Long white cloud, Baden is back with his Poon Boon Lamb, Farmer Joe is back with Goat meat, June and Graham have Venison, and Jordan is in with Pork and Milk. Michael is back with Smoked trout and Gaby is back with her Oranges.

It just makes you think that even in the most extreme weather conditions we can still access some of the finest farm produced goods available anywhere in Melbourne.
